Food Glorious Food

Having just cooked and enjoyed this, thought I`d share it with you all.

Going to the fishmongers this morning to get the fish, there was no plaice and the cod and haddock didn`t look too fresh, so the lady suggeted I tried this. It was a fish that I`d never eaten before, but I said "ok, I`ll be adventurous and try it", they assured me I would like it... and... guess what?.... they were right, we all enjoyed it.

Favourite Recipe

One of the things I enjoy doing when I`ve got a couple of hours to spare is to have a baking session - Cakes, biscuits, scones, sausage-rolls, apple pies etc. I wonder where the origin of baking came from? Who made the first cake, the first biscuit, the first apple pie? Who discovered that you could combine ingredients and then put them in an oven to get results? Interesting thought isn`t it.

I`ll share with you, one of my favourite cake recipies, its one that I traditionally now make for birthdays or when we want a special cake and not a fruit cake.

ORANGE & CHOCOLATE CHIP CAKE

6½ oz. margarine
7½ oz. caster sugar
9 oz. self-raising flour
rind of 1 orange
juice of ½ orange
3 eggs
4 oz. plain chocolate, roughly chopped

Grease and flour an 8inch round or 7inch square cake tin
Preheat oven to 300°F/150°C/Gas mark 2

Place the margarine, sugar, flour, rind and juice of the orange, in a bowl add the eggs (unbeaten), mix together and beat well. Add the chocolate and beat again.

Turn mixture into tin, place in centre of oven and bake for 1¼ - 1½ hours. Turn out of tin and cool on a wire rack.

TIP: For a crunchy top, sprinkle top with granulated or caster sugar before putting in the oven.

Or, when cool, melt some chocolate in a basin over hot water (or in the microwave) and pour over the cake, decorate with cake decorations as desired. Leave to set before serving.

More food thoughts

A few more "foody" thoughts.... this this might turn out to be a week of thoughts and comments on food!

I`ve not a lot of time to write today, so a few questions...

Why are cream crackers called that - there`s no cream in them
Why is toad in the hole so called - it doesn`t contain toads!
Or why is Shepherds pie, so called - there`s no shepherds in it
Or, cottage pie? it`s not made from cottages!

Unusual Breakfast?

Sitting eating my Rice Krispie sandwich this morning (Yes, you did read that right) - not for me the toasted rice cereal made soggy in a bowl of milk, I like my Rice Krispies sandwiched between two slices of white bread spread quite thickly with butter - I wondered if anyone else eats their cereal like that.
I know I`m an odd creature, so maybe its just me that doesn`t like soggy cereal, or anything else soggy.
That set me wondered too, what other odd or unusual things people enjoy for breakfast.

Thoughts on food (1)

How many different foods do we eat in a day?
Well, today, I`ve had:-
Bread
Butter
Cereal
Tea, with milk and sugar,
Lamb
Potatoes,
Peas,
Jelly
Oranges,
Dream Topping (more milk involved here)
Water
Sponge cakes
Orange juice
Chocolate
Teacakes
Biscuits
Chocolate Cake (with cream in)
Sweets

Just looking at that list, and that`s just in one day, how long would the list be if I continued it for a whole week?! How lucky we are to have such a variety of food in just one day.

More food thoughts tomorrow!
No, not another list, so come back to read again tomorrow.

Surprise Gift

I received this beautiful surprize gift the other day. It was very touching and unexpected. It was not only me that received this gift but several of us where I work.
One of the people we work with had recently had her father quite poorly and he had gone into a home and within a few weeks died. She bought us all one of these to thank us for all the support we had given her during that time. Yet, we, or at least I know that I had done nothing special to deserve it. I`d enquired most days how he was, how she was and maybe offered a few suggestions of things that might help but I hadn`t done anything much.
To be given a Thank You gift that I didn`t feel that I deserved was so moving. Posted by Picasa

Tranquil gardens

The sun drew me out this afternoon, instead of getting on with jobs that I should have been doing indoors, I got in the car, drove a short distance to some gardens with a maze, and had a lovely walk in through the gardens. Not formal beds of plants and flowers in these gardens, but natural borders with grassy paths, a stream running through, forming ponds and the sounds of running water.
Not being a person to like feeling enclosed and trapped, I didn`t venture into the maze, but enjoyed the freedom of walking in the open air, feeling the breeze on my arms, seeing the unusual plants and flowers. There were very few people there, so it was really lovely, peaceful and a place to pleasantly spend an hour or so, a place to escape to. Here are a few pictures I took there.

Different Scenes

Do you get tired of looking at the same things? I know I do very often.
Well, incase any of you, my readers, have got fed up with lookingat the same pictures that scroll along the top of my blog, I`ve given you a change today. Instead of a random selection of my photos, as it`s summertime you can take a walk along a cliff top by the sea and watch the sun go down.

Birds in Storms

The weathermen - (or to be politically correct, should I say the weather people?) are predicting more heavy rain and storms for this week.
One thing I often wonder when we have such weather is - what do all the birds and animals make of it? After all, you can`t tell them what`s happening. Does the sight of lightning and the sound of thunder frighten them? how do they cope with it? And how do they, especially the birds manage to keep dry because the rain goes through bushes and trees.

A marvel of nature

Something that I always marvel over when I touch them, is feathers.

Here, in the picture of some from my little bird - No, before anyone gets worried, I didn`t pluck them from him, so there`s no need to call the animal protection societies! These he lost quite naturally.

To gently run my fingers along each one and I feel their absolute softness and silkiness, the way each individual strand clings to the next one, the soft curl on some of the small ones and the delicate colouring at the tips of them. The contrast in the stronger firmer wing and tail ones, which have such a distinct silky almost waxy, yet strong quality about them. The way that if you separate some strands on the wing ones and then smooth them back again, they just seem to lock back into place as if they`d never been disturbed. How wonderful. Who could make or invent such a thing of beauty as that today?

I wonder too, how many feathers does a bird have? Posted by Picasa

The Price of Fish

Having written about the fish I cooked last week, here`s another fishy blog!

I wonder how many readers are like me, and really just take it for granted that one can just go to the fish shop and buy fish, maybe even complaining at the price of it. I wouldn`t say I`ve complained about the price, because I`d always buy fish, my favourites being dover sole, brill or turbot.

But having watched the series of programmes on BBC the other week all about the trawlermen who go out deep sea fishing to bring us these delicacies, makes one realise the danger they put their lives into to catch the fish, and the hard times they have when the nets come up empty. It really makes me really appreciated the fish all the more. And give thanks for those who go to sea.

Resolution keeping

I`m pleased with myself today!....I`ve succeeded in at least making an attempt to keep one of the new year resolutions that I made. I know its been almost eight months since I made them, but at least I`ve made the effort before the end of the year.

What have I been doing… I`ve made a start on finishing the cross stitch picture which I started at least five years ago. I`ve been meaning and meaning to get on with it, because it should be a lovely picture when it`s finished and I want to see it hanging on my wall. So, as it was a nice sunny afternoon I took the canvas, on its frame, along with all the cottons, pattern and my needle and scissors out to the summer house. No telephone to disturb me, no one to talk and distract me, and I spent a peaceful couple of hours on my own stitching away at it.

The picture is of dolphins and coral under the sea, when it`s finished (not for a while yet because of the size of it), I`ll put a picture here for you all to see. Maybe if you all jog me at times, it will encourage me to make sure I complete it now that I`ve got going on it again.

Blogging mystery

I wonder if anyone else has come across this problem, and if so, how do I solve it?

I`ve posted daily blogs on here using Firefox, which I`ve always done, yet since Wednesday`s one they`ve not appeared when I go into my blog to look at it. Yet, if I open Internet Explorer to look at it, the blogs for Thursday and Friday are there.... why is it?

Fish & Chips

One of my favourite meals has to be fish and chips. Maybe its because I live by the sea and it’s a traditional dish. Today I did something I hadn`t done for a long, long while, and that was go to the wet fish shop and buy some fish, then over the road to the greengrocers and get some nice big potatoes.

Home I went with them, peeled the potatoes, cut them into chips and put them in the deep fry. Then I got out a mixing bowl into which went some flour and water and a tiny bit of bicarbonate of soda. Once that was well mixed to a smooth batter I dipped my whole plaice in it, thoroughly coated it, then gently lowered it into the deep fry. After the necessary time, it came out, golden and beautiful. How I enjoyed my tasty dinner today! I`m by no means decrying the usual Friday dinner of fish and chips from the chip shop, but ohhh what a difference home cooked has. I must do it more often. Anyone want any?!

What, that time already!

It`s summer, its the beginning of August, it`s a hot sunny day, and the postman trudges up to the front door, and pushes something through the letter box. It lands with a solid thump on the floor. That sounds a bit more interesting that junk mail leaflets which usually flutter to the floor, so I went to pick up the envelope that had landed on the door mat. Well, I say envelope, it was one of those transparent sealed wrappings, a catalogue.

From the back it looked just like a normal catalogue, turning it over to look at the front I discovered that this charity catalogue.... was their Christmas issue! Whatever next? Will one for Easter cards follow in a couple of weeks?

This is only August, Christmas is 19 weeks away, over 4 months away. That`s a whole 147 days, over a third of the year still to live through before then. So why does anyone think I want to do my Christmas shopping now?

Needless to say, it will remain unopened

Taken for Granted

How quickly we seem to have taken using computers, photocopiers, calculators and other such items for granted. It really makes me wonder how did we live a few years ago without all these items!!

And, even more questioningly and worringly- will children of the future know what to do with a pen or a pencil? Or will it be an item in a museum, to be wondered at?!

Questions & Answers

A colleague passed this on to me, so I thought I`d share it on here......

The day finally arrived. Forrest Gump dies and goes to Heaven.

He is at the Pearly Gates, met by St. Peter himself. However, the gates are closed, and Forrest approaches the gatekeeper.

St. Peter said, "Well, Forrest, it is certainly good to see you. We have heard a lot about you. I must tell you, though, that the place is filling up fast, and we have been administering an entrance examination for everyone. The test is short, but you have to pass it before you can get into Heaven."

Forrest responds, "It sure is good to be here, St. Peter, sir. But nobody ever told me about any entrance exam. I sure hope that the test ain't too hard. Life was a big enough test as it was."

St. Peter continued, "Yes, I know, Forrest, but the test is only three questions.
First: What two days of the week begin with the letter T?
Second: How many seconds are there in a year?
Third: What is God's first name?"

Forrest leaves to think the questions over. He returns the next day and sees St. Peter, who waves him up, and says, "Now that you have had a chance to think the questions over, tell me your answers."

Forrest replied, "Well, the first one -- which two days in the week begins with the letter "T"? Shucks, that one is easy. That
would be Today and Tomorrow."

The Saint's eyes opened wide and he exclaimed, "Forrest, that is not what I was thinking, but you do have a point, and I guess I did not specify, so I will give you credit for that answer. How about the next one?" asked St. Peter.

"How many seconds in a year? Now that one is harder," replied Forest, but I thunk and thunk about that, and I guess the only answer can be twelve."

Astounded, St. Peter said, "Twelve? Twelve? Forrest, how in Heaven's name could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?"!

Forrest replied, "Shucks, there's got to be twelve: January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd... "

"Hold it," interrupts St. Peter. "I see where you are going with this, and I see your point, though that was not quite what I had in mind....but I will have to give you credit for that one, too. Let us go on with the third and final question. Can you tell me God's first name"?

"Sure," Forrest replied, "it's Andy."

"Andy?" exclaimed an exasperated and frustrated St Peter. "Ok, I can understand how you came up with your answers to my first two questions, but just how in the world did you come up with the name Andy as the first name of God?"

"Shucks, that was the easiest one of! all," Forrest replied. "I learnt it from the song, "ANDY WALKS WITH ME, ANDY TALKS WITH ME, ANDY TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN. . "

St. Peter opened the Pearly Gates, and said: "Run Forrest, run."

Give me a sense of humour, Lord.
Give me the ability to understand a clean joke,
To get some humour out of life,
And to pass it on to other folk.

Frustration

My frustration today, is living with someone who is so slow in everything they do. I feel that it holds me back so much, and wastes so much of my time, just waiting for them - to eat a meal, to get ready to go out, to do a job which I could do quicker on my own.

Mishap

I had a calamity out in the garden this afternoon. I went out there to have a quiet sit in the sun, well I should say in the shade, a simple enough thing to do, take my book, get a chair out of the summerhouse, then get the garden umbrella to put up.

I first checked all round the outside of the umbrella when I got it out of the shed incase there was any spiders on it, but no, all clear. But, then on starting to unfold it a largish spider dropped out almost on me, so I instinctively jumped quickly out of the way and made sure it ran in the opposite direction to me!

Then, as I got the umbrella partly opened, I spotted a bee in the inside top of it, which suddenly dropped off - again I jumped to avoid it getting on me and in the same instant I got a downpour of water over my foot and skirt!, for a second I couldn`t think where it had come from. Then I looked down and saw there was a fair size hole in the base of the umbrella stand, and I realised, I must have jumped on the base which was a kind of plastic and I suppose had got brittle over the years it had been out in the sun, and my foot had gone through it breaking a piece off, and hence the water shot over my foot.

So there I ended up sitting with the umbrella propped on its side, more like a wind break, but at least it kept the sun off, with a wet foot and skirt! How glamorous!!
(Still, I`m not a very glamorous person anyway, so it didn`t really matter.)

Helpless

I know I`ve given short measure in writing blogs this week, but I haven`t known what to write about. As well as feeling helpless to help the situation I wrote about on my last blog this week, I`m also feeling helpless as to how to help a work colleague who is going through a very difficult time at the moment. Obviously I`m not going to write about her problems here, but suffice to say that a tragedy that happened to a member of her family about eight months ago, now seems to have come to a head and is causing her untold grief and heartache again, and with additional problems. How I wish I was better at knowing what to say to help.

Rain, rain and more rain

After weeks of hot, dry, sunny weather, things have suddenly changed and its rain, rain, rain. I know we badly need the water as they say the reservoirs are low and there may be water restrictions in some parts of the country, but it`s very alarming the power effect that heavy showers of rain can have.

For the first time in as long as I can remember a Carnival has had to be cancelled because of the weather. (Not, I hasten to add that I`m a great fan of carnivals. But, I do feel sorry for all the people that put so much time and effort into preparing their costumes and floats).

But more seriously than that, it’s the way it`s the way it can damage peoples homes and possessions. I wrote the other day about the way I`d found a friends house that I was keeping an eye on, had had water in, well yesterday it was even worse for that person,. Again we had torrential storms and torrents of rain water which went into his house, to such an extent that he had to have the emergency services to pump it out. I feel that I want to reach out comfort and help, but feel so helpless to know how to, or what to do for the best.

A Beautiful Dome

I went for a walk yesterday evening, along by a creek. It was beautiful, the sun was out but a nice breeze kept it from being too hot. There were only very few people about and it was so peaceful.

Getting quite a way along and coming to an end of the path I stood on a kind of beach area totally alone, and just took in the wonder of all about me. It was just flat marsh land, creeks and inlets, and openness. So much space and quietness.

The sun went slightly behind a cloud causing me to look up at the sky, and I am so glad I did. I just stood and looked and looked. There were a few clouds, mostly fluffy white ones, and but one or two others in shades of grey. But the sky seemed to have a special quality about it, the blues and turquoise were so translucent, and I got a great sense of the shape of a dome covering me, and all round me, as I could see the sky touching flat land all round which ever way I turned. (In some ways it made me feel as if I was in one of those snow-storm dome ornaments) I felt totally covered and secure beneath this beautiful dome. It had me mesmerised as I stood there, just looking and taking it all in.

Church Attendance

They say Church attendances are dropping, and going by the service I attended this morning, I can easily see why. I felt sorry for any one who might have decided to come to the church for the first time today, I know if it had been me, I wouldn`t have gone again.

The preacher was an elderly gentleman, obviously a scientist, because what we had was a science lesson. At the start he instructed us that we were not to let our minds wander, nor to appear to close our eyes that he would be watching us.

There was not one, not two but three sermons within the service! And, I`m sure his watch kept different time to ours! The three ’talks’/sermons would be not more that 25 minutes altogether he said, - his maths are obviously different to mine - the first sermon was 20 minutes, the second 15 minutes and the last one almost 15 minutes - to my reckoning that makes a total of 50 minutes. The traditional hour long service went on for an hour and a quarter, but seemed more like two hours. Maybe its that I`m not scientifically minded, but after the first five minutes, I was totally lost on what he was talking about, and yes, my mind wandered for the rest of the time.

But, it really made me think - what does that sort of thing say to anyone unused to going to church?

Peter Pan

Well, as promised yesterday, here is a photo of some of the flower festival which I went to see yesterday. This one particularly caught my attentiong with the way the crocodile had been made from pieces of conifer, and oranges and cherries for its eyes. What original and clever ideas people do have.

Festival visiting

I`ve been to see another Flower Festival this afternoon, it was at a village church, and was very good. A nice welcome was given by the people on duty at the door, along with a free programme. (Different to the one I went to a few weeks ago where we were charged £3 for a tiny admission programme). This one was all on the theme of Pantomimes. I took several photos so may post one tomorrow, once I`ve downloaded them from my camera to the computer. It always interests me at these events as to how people manage to find just the right accessories to go with their arrangements. For instance on the Cinderella one, who would have a glass slipper to use... but there was a perfect one on the arrangement. It`s attention to detail like this that makes for such a good effect and shows the time and care taken over getting everything right.

Water, water everywhere

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. Well, I don`t know where that quite familiar saying comes from, but that was very much the feeling where I was earlier today. I wonder what the origin of that saying is?

Having been out for an afternoon shopping, we drove back and became aware that there must have been a shower of rain, as the road became wet and we saw puddles along the verges. The nearer to home we got the larger the puddles seemed to get, and sand and stones, shingle also became apparent. There must have been a heavy shower we said to one another, - but little did we realise just how heavy a shower we had missed witnessing.

Having delivered a friend and our shopping safely home, I proceeded on to a friends house that I was keeping an eye on this week. Approaching it, I discovered an extremely large area of water lying on the adjoining car park, and around the gate area. No access that way, so I went via the driveway, paddled through the water lying over the path, which fortunately wasn`t as deep as by the gate. As I approached the door, I passed lots of broken bits of shrubs and leaves, a chunk of wood, which once was by the gate, and a trough of plants, which had once been by the front door, was now by the side door - obviously swept there by the water which had flooded around the house.

On entering, at first, all seemed in order, but then, going to pick up the mail, I discovered that it was absolutely saturated with water. Yes, the water had gone into the porch. On to the study, and horror - on my way I found a patch of wet carpet in the middle of the house. Now that was a bit of a mystery, is the roof leaking? I climbed on a chair and felt the ceiling above the wet patch, but no, the ceiling thankfully was bone dry. On feeling the carpet it became obvious that somehow the water was seeping up from below. Then, worse still, on entering the study I saw immediately that the carpet was wet. The darker wet part could clearly been seen covering over half of the room from the window. I hurriedly moved all that I could to drier parts of the room.

Looking out of the window at the back garden, I was astonished to see that the garden had turned into a swimming pool! Not though that anyone would want to swim in the muddy water which was about a foot deep. Still, at least it had watered the very dry garden!

Frustration computing

They say computers have minds of their own - and I think I believe them !

Mine has made me really frustrated today. I did a largish typing job yesterday, using Publisher, which I normally use, and kept frequently Saving my work. I printed off a copy and it all printed out fine, so I closed the file in the normal way, again saving the work.

So, why when I open the file this morning, has it not saved any of the work? I needed to alter a couple of things after a friend had proof read the work for me, but it`s not there. What happened? its a mystery to me.

Bird Watching

I was watching some starlings outside the other day. They certainly have brains!

There were three of them, and one had a piece of bread or food of some kind in his beak, naturally the other two birds wanted it too, and everywhere that he went to try and get away from them, they followed him. The poor thing couldn`t put the food down to eat, because as soon as he did the other two were there trying to snatch it away from him. They must have been frustrated too, I suppose that they could see food and couldn`t get it. Anyway, one of them began to lose interest and went a bit further away, but it was the other one, that caught my attention.

He (or she!) seemed to think of a new way to get the food from the first bird. He stood and turned away from the one with the food, so then the one with the food, thinking they`d left him alone dropped the bread onto the path and as soon as he did so, the other bird suddenly made a rush for it, so again the first bird picked it up. The second bird then again stood and turned his back on the first one, as if to say, ok you have it…. But as soon as the other one put the food down to eat, the other one made a run to grab it. The first couple of times I didn`t really think much about it, but the bird did this a dozen times or more. So, it was obviously a deliberate ploy on his part, to fool the first bird. I don`t think the first one was a sharp as the second one, because he never seemed to twig what was going on!

It was really amusing to watch, and made me realise how birds can use their brains.

Fishermen

I recently came across what looked as if it might be an interesting book, it was on a bookstall at something I was at recently. It`s very rarely that I look at bookstalls, and even rarer that I purchase anything from them. But something made me stop and look, and amongst all the tables full of books this one caught my eye, so I decided to buy it.

This afternoon I`ve been sitting out in the garden reading it, and to my delight I found, amongst memories and experiences told by other old fisherment that I knew, (who have died since the book was written) that my great-grandad was mentioned two or three times.

It was so interesting to read of the life that they lived, to realise just how much hardship they did live through, and to realise what great characters they were. Their bravery in manning the lifeboats without thought for their own safety, and even when crab fishing how they "looked out" for one another when it blew up rough to make sure everyone of them got safely ashore. Although sadly, despite their concern for each other, that wasn`t always what happened, many did tragically lose their lives, trying to make their livelihood and living from the sea.

Thankfully my great-grandad did survive it, as did my grandad - but sadly both died before I was old enough to know them, and to hear about their lifes.

Green or Brown

Looking out of the window at our garden this week, it looks a sorry state, the lawn is brown instead of green. Yet looking closer I could see some bits of green. On closer investigation - going outside - walking over the turf the ground felt as hard as iron, not a bit springy how grass should - I found that the areas of green I could see, weren`t grass at all, they were weeds. So, how is it that although the grass in the heat goes brown the weeds don`t?! Is there no way of killing them off.

Breaking eggs

So, why did I break all those eggs? (yesterday`s posting) Well, I went to the fridge yesterday afternoon and all I could see in there were boxes upon boxes of eggs.... we have a man who brings us half a dozen eggs each week, but with having had two weeks holiday and not so many hot meals with the hot weather, the cartons of eggs had just got put in the fridge. And, sitting there on the shelves looking at me, were 26 eggs!

Now, there`s only two of us in the house, so we couldn`t eat them all as omelettes, fried, boiled or scrambled without having them meal after meal after meal, so I decided something had to be done with them. Out came the mixing bowl, food mixer and cake tins and I had a baking session. Something I used to love doing but haven`t done for a long time.

So now, instead of eggs sitting in the fridge, there`s sponge cakes, buns and sponge flans sitting in the freezer! As well a cherry buns and a sponge being eaten.

(Guess some of them could come in useful for the cricket club!)

A Smashing Time

I`ve had a smashing time today! I`ve broken 15 eggs.

Now, you`re probably thinking, what a clumsy person she is, but let me hasten to add, I didn`t drop them, nor did I knock a pile of them over in a shop, I didn`t throw them at anything or anyone. I didn`t make scrambled egg for a party with them, so what did I do with them?.....

Thanksgiving service.

I`ve just attended a very beautiful, uplifting, thankful service for the life of a lady who has died. The service was like no other of its kind that I have been to for the atmosphere and the brightness and praise. (thankfully I`ve not been to too many, but seem to have attended more this year than ever in my life - maybe its my age catching up with me!).

The church was packed to bursting point with people and children of all ages. Lovely and moving tributes were given about the person, and I admired the courage of those who stood up to speak about a person they`d loved so much. But, what I really found made the most impression on me was during the singing of one of the hymns.

The organist really got all the hymns going with a good tempo and the volume of singing was terrific, but on this one verse in particular of the hymn Love Divine, where it says "changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise", there was to me such a crescendo of music and voice that it seemed as if heaven and earth were actually joined at that moment. It`s something very difficult to describe and put into words, but it was to me an intense sensation and very strong feeling, whether anyone else there felt the same, I don`t know, but it certainly seemed to touch me, and is something I shall never forget.

Something else that that service made me think and realise, is that when I die I don`t want people to be sad, but that I would want a service of praise of that kind, and not a sad type service.

Card hunting

It must be the heat.... but I can`t think what to write about again today. I could tell you about my chase around the shops in our town to buy a simple item, but would that really make intereting reading?

Assuming you`ve said yes!...
I was doing a simple photocopying job today of something that just had to be done ready for tomorrow, and I miscounted the sheets of coloured card that I`d got in the pack. Why do manufacturers confuse us by only putting 250 sheets of card in a ream, whereas paper has 500 sheets? Anyway, finding I`d only got half what I needed to do the job, thought, that`s no problem I`ll walk into the town and get another ream, either of 2 colours would be suitable.

So, off I went in the hot sun, straight to the stationery shop, searched the shelves, couldn`t find what I wanted, so next step, ask an assistant. Oh, no,we don`t use that much now, I don`t think we`ve got any, she helpfully said, but did then go and search all the shelves for me. I explained the desparate need I`d got for it, and she went and looked in their office as she said she knew they`d got a few sheets there, may be just enough for my need. Back she came, yes the colour was right, but - it was paper, not card.

So, off I went to another likely shop. Same process, searched the shelves, found an assistant, and was told, no we don`t have reams of card, we just buy a big pack of mixed colours and sell it at separate sheets, (these I discovered were 30p each),that was no good for my need of at least 100 sheets. She suggested I try a local discount type shop, off I went to the other end of the town. No they didn`t sell it, so the next thing was to walk home again and search out what odds and ends I`d got that might be possible if not the same colour, then walk back again in the still sweltering sun to where the machine was.
By the time I got there it was a good hour since I`d set out, and I was melting!
We then found a few more sheets of different coloured card there, and between the lot, I managed to get the job done.

But who would have thought it could be so difficult to buy a ream of thin card.

Typing words

I`ve just been typing out some words of hymns onto a sheet, and I`ve found myself really reading what they say and getting far more meaning into them, then when I sing them. Strange isn`t it?

I suppose though when one is singing them, especially when they are well known ones with well known tunes, it almost seems as if you do it in auto-pilot. Although, having said that, sometimes a sentence or phrase within them will suddenly strike a chord, or become apparent and show me something that I hadn`t noticed about it before.
But,I think to type words out is a very good exercise. Even better (to me anyway), than just reading the words and verses, because even doing that the tunes seem to pop into my head and take the words along with them.

It`s not the first time that I`ve noticed this happening, but am I alone in this or does anyone else find the same?

A Floral Wedding

I`ve been to another Flower Festival today, this time in the town on Downham Market. It was entitled “Invitation to a Wedding”, and along with all the displays were wedding dresses of ladies who had been married at the church. It was interesting to see the different styles of dresses from the 1930`s up to the 2000`s. But, one thing that I noticed was that surely a wedding is between two people – a man and a woman…. yet there was not one arrangement that had any sign of the man!

Shopping Spree

I`m on holiday this week, so I`ve been on a spending spree today!
Things that have happened recently to people that I knew, have made me realise again, that one has to make the most of what one has, and the life one has, because who knows what tomorrow will hold. So, I decided to spoil myself and go and get something that I`d been toying with the idea of getting for quite a while now.

So today, off I went to a large store on the outskirts of the big city, and after discussions with a very helpful young salesman I made my purchase. What was it?....No, not clothes, or shoes, or anything like that, nor make-up (I `m not one of those women who go in for a lot of that stuff.) I like gadgets!

Sitting in my room now, is a laptop computer, something I`m sure I shall put to good use in the coming weeks, once I get used to not having a mouse to chase around it! But, I`ll still be doing my blogging and bits on this one too, but now I have the opportunity to sit in more comfort too, or even in the summer house!

It`s here

I think I wrote a few weeks ago about my room changing round in my house.... well, today my new bit double bed arrived. So, only a short post tonight, because I now want to go and try it out. What luxury it will be to be able to stretch out and not feel an edge either side.

A Day Out

Somehow today, that phrase has taken on a new meaning to me. A day out had always seemed to refer to having a trip out, to going somewhere for a few hours. Well, that was partially true too about today, but it seemed to have a deeper significance of having a day out today.

I set off this morning and went to Sunny Hunny (yes, it`s known as that, but if you`ve never heard it, I`m referring to Hunstanton), and it was sunny, it was a beautiful day. I parked along by a large stretch on grass on the cliffs and walked into the town, had a little wander round, then went and got myself some fish & chips for lunch, I took it back to the car, got my folding chair out and sat there on the grass looking at the sea, eating my plaice and chips. Delicious! Why does food taste better in the open air? The sea was like a mill pond, very blue, smooth and going out leaving a long stretch of golden sand. Having eaten my lunch, I got out my book and settled down to read, and it was just so peaceful sitting there, I could almost have dropped off to sleep!

A walk and an ice-cream later, it came to me, that today had seemed more than a day out at the sea-side, it was a “day out” of a busy life, a time to be me, a real rest from routine. That I had literally taken “a day out of the week” and actually done `nothing`, but had enjoyed it. I wasn`t that many miles from home, yet it seemed a world away. I`d appreciated the good things around me, the sea, the cooling breeze on the cliffs which kept it from being overpoweringly hot, the food, the quietness, the space, but most of all it had been `a day out` in the full sense of the meaning.

One thing leads to another

I`m at the moment surrounded by boxes, stands, plastic baskets, papers, folders, and all sorts of odds and ends, I can barely see the floor in my room, every possible surface has something on it!
After the busy few days of taking part in a large event, I`m now trying to put all my things back into cupboards, but as usual when I start to do something like that, I end up trying to rearrange things and trying to be more organised - but whether I will succeed???! And, one thing leads to another, as I think, well if I move that to another place, I could shift that over there.... and so on..... is it only me or do others do the same I wonder. And, why does there always look to be far more items than will fit in the cupboard, or far more than came out, although there is actually less?

Speedy Holiday

I`ve just had a week of a fortnights holiday, and now I sit here thinking, that this time next week I`ll be thinking of going back to work. Yet, where has that time gone to? I`ve had a thoroughly good and enjoyable week, and look forward to this coming week, but how, I wonder can I make this second of the two weeks last longer?

Touch and see?

Do you see with your fingers? You may think that`s a ridiculous question, but I`ve been intrigued at an event I`ve been to this week, by the way in which people - yes adults, not just children - when viewing displays cannot seem content to just do as they are meant and expected to do, and that is look with their eyes and take in what is before them in that way. Why, oh why do they want to touch? Even delicate flowers seem to draw their fingers to get hold of the petals, but why? - they can see the colour, the shape and texture with their eyes.
Maybe, its because I was brought up to look and not touch, that it both intrigues and annoys me to see others doing this. It`s annoying because it seems to show a lack of respect for someone elses work or property. So, why do people do it?

Peacock

I`ve been too preoccupied with so much this week that I haven`t been able to think of what to write here. But for all bird lovers, here`s a stunning and unusual peacock that I saw this week.

Wonderful World.

If anyone missed me blogging yesterday, it was that I was too tired after a busy day, and tonight I`ve got a painful back, must be all the climbing I did yesterday.
Anyway, here`s a picture of some beautiful flowers that I saw today. Isn`t it a wonderful world that we have such beauty as this all around us, as well as skillful and talented people to arrange the flowers.

Night Owl

I seem to have become a night owl lately. Where does the time go to? I always used to be in bed by a reasonable hour and considered myself a morning lark more than a night owl.
I wonder why we use birds for those phrases. Why not bats, or badgers for being up late?
Though perhaps I am `bats` for being up so late, and still up early in the mornings!

A beautiful summer`s day

A few weeks ago I had an invitation to go to Sandringham.

So today I went, fortunately I`d already booked the day off work earlier in the year, so it seemed as if it was meant to be, because normally I wouldn`t have a Saturday off.

It was a beautiful hot sunny day, but with just a nice breeze to keep it from being to overpowering. I got there in good time and found a nice spot to park under the shade of a big tree. So I had a bit of a wander around, then waited. After a while my mobile phone rang, and it was my friend to say that her coach was almost there, so we arranged where we`d meet.

Having met her off the coach, we had a bite to eat then got our tickets and went into the beautiful gardens and grounds, and then into Sandringham House. We both straightaway said what a good feeling the building had about it, homely and cared for, and we enjoyed our walk through the rooms that were open to the public. Then we went and looked at the interesting exhibiton of some of the many gifts which the Queen receives on her various visits to places both in this country and abroad - what a wide assortemnt of things there were, from ostrich eggs in beaded covers, to foreign masks, seashells to wooden boxes.

We then walked along by a stream and lake where we found a seat under the shade of a tree and sat and caught up with each others news. Sitting there we heard sounds coming along the shingle path in front of us, and looking up saw horses drawing a trap, several more followed at intervals, all looking in their finest livery. They were a very striking sight in the sunlight. We discovered that there was a Driving Trial taking place, and these were part of it.

Walking futher through the grounds on our way back to the car and coach park we saw some young coots with their mother on the lake along with many geese and ducks, such a lovely sight on the green of the grass lawn. It really was a perfect summers day out, and something I wish I had the time to do more often. We both enjoyed the day and the pleasure of seeing each other again too.

How does your Garden grow?

How does your garden grow?

Mine`s grown! Yes, my garden has suddenly grown bigger.

I looked at it on Tuesday morning and it was the normal size, when I looked at it again on Wednesday evening it had grown a lot bigger! I don`t mean the plants, flowers and shrubs have grown bigger, (although some of them have). The whole size of the garden is bigger.

No, I`ve not moved house, I`ve not taken down the fence into my neighbours garden, I`ve not knocked down any sheds, greenhouses or anything.. so, what has caused this amazing effect?..... I`ve had a narrow path taken up and a wider one put down, sounds as if it would make the garden smaller doesn`t it, but, instead of having it put down where the old one was in the centre of the lawn (well, if you can call it a lawn, its more moss and weeds), its been laid at the side of the garden, and the centre where it was has become turf, making one whole area. The result, it looks much bigger.

Infact, I could consider making a putting green in the lawn now…. anyone fancy a game?

Diagnosis

Well, for any of you who think I`m an odd creature, (and I think that about myself very often!) this might explain or confirm it. When this was said to me this afternoon, I thought am I hearing right and I asked him to repeat it, but yes I had heard right. "You`ve got policeman`s heel", he said.
So, if you see me suddenly stand in the road and start directing traffic, you`ll know why, I`ve got some policeman`s heel in place of my own!

[What was he referring to? - the pain in my foot that I wrote about the other day. Apparently that`s the name for it, as well as it having a complicated name that I can`t pronounce, let alone spell.]

Time and Tide

Time and Tide wait for no man, so they say. Well, it doesn`t seem to wait for this woman either!

A large event which I take part in each year is in July. Now, when you say July it sounds ages away, yet, all at once it`s just about here. It`s crept, or should I say, rushed, towards me and caught me out again. Every year I say to myself I`m going to get all my things prepared and ready in good time, so that I`m not doing a lot at the last minute – and what happens – yes, the months fly by and the weeks speed on and suddenly it`s almost the end of June, and I`ve still got a lot that I want to do. Yes, “want” to do, not have to do, there is a big difference. All the essential "have to do jobs are done", it`s the extras that I want time to do. So, will I get it all done in time? I hope so.

If only I could slow the time and tide down a bit, that would help!! Any ideas how to do that?!

Trumpet blowing!

I`m feeling quite pleased today, and not being one to `blow my own trumpet` I want to share it, so am going to write it here.

I think I put in my blog a few weeks ago about the changes that had taken place on the ownership of where I work, well one of the new owners had a chat with us all individually today, and I was paid a lot of compliments by him, including being told that my area of work was the one they`d found in the end that they had to spend the least time with, as I was the most organised person he`d come across, to being told that they`d like me to take on some of the more involved paperwork that they`ve been doing up till now.

It is nice to know that you are appreciated for the work for the work you do, isn`t it.

Balance

I`m wishing I could be like this bird and stand so easily on one leg to take the weight off my heel and foot that hurts. (and No, before anyone wonders, I`m not excessively heavy!)
Wonder how they manage to stand like that for so long without toppling over, must be very useful.

Milk Bath!

It`s no use crying over spilt milk - or so the saying goes.

Well, I`m not crying, but I`ve just been busy mopping up spilt milk.

Having taken some milk out in a beaker for our picnic flask of tea, I had the remainer of it standing on the work top in the kitchen whilst making a drink for supper. I`d reached across it to get the kettle, made the drinks, put the kettle back, all safely without knocking it over, then.... taking a tea bag out of the mug (yes, I lazily didn`t make tea in the teapot!), the beaker of milk somehow must have got caught by the spoon, because I heard a splosh and felt my skirt get wet, my slipper and my foot get wet and the floor got a nice covering too!

What I`d like to know is, why does a quarter of a beaker of milk seem like a pint when it`s spilt?!

Mid Summer?

So today was mid-summer day. Has the summer really half gone? it doesn`t really seem to have arrived here yet.

Looking up mid-summer customs I came across this:
In antiquity midsummer fires were lit in high places all over the countryside, and in some areas of Scotland Midsummer fires were still being lit well into the 18th century.. It was a time when the domestic beasts of the land were blessed with fire, generally by walking them around the fire in a sun-wise direction. It was also customary for people to jump high through the fires, folklore suggesting that the height reached by the most athletic jumper, would be the height of that years harvest.

Have you lit a fire and jumped over it today? I wouldn`t dare, I`d probably land in it!

Mysterious pain

I`ve got a pain in my foot, well in my right heel to be exact, and I don`t know why. It just appeared yesterday. I`ve not knocked it, tripped over anything, walked into anything, dropped anything on it, done nothing to cause it. It hurts when I stand, walk or put any weight on it, but yet I can press it and touch it and it doesn`t hurt. So what caused it? What is it? (old age???)

It`s a mystery to me. I just hope it disappears as quickly as it came! I can`t keep on walking about on tiptoe with one foot and normally with the other. And that`s not as easy to do as it sounds!.

Stapler purchasing

I had the need to purchase four staplers recently. Easy I thought. Look through the Stationery firms catalogue, select the most appropriate for our needs and price range, ring up the company, quote the relevant item number and tell them the quantity required, other items required, delivery address etc. I picked up the phone, rang and got answered straight away! The job done in a few minutes. Sat back and wait for delivery.

Next day, duly as promised a box arrived from the firm, I opened it, unpacked it – yes everything was there….except the staplers. Rang the firm again, “oh, didn`t they tell you` the girl” said “they come direct and will arrive in the next couple of days”. “Ok then”, I said.

The following day the box arrived a huge box, 24 inches x 15 inches x 9 inches (if you not like me that works in inches, that`s 62x39x23cm!), I opened it – in it sat one lonely stapler, 15 inches x 3inches x 2 inches (39x8x5cm) looking rather lost in such a big box.

So, another phone call to the firm “there`s only one on the order” they said “No, I ordered four”, I replied, “we`ll send you another three” said the girl. Two days later, another box arrived – same size as the previous two boxes. Opened it – and – yet again just one stapler. So I went through the same process, rang the firm, (glad it was a free phone number!), got transferred from one department to another, in the end “we`ll send you the other two”. (no apology).

And, today another box arrived – still the same size – and…. I could hardly believe it ….. there inside were….TWO staplers. Hurray!, at last my order was complete.
But I`ve also got 4 enormous cardboard boxes to get rid of – what a waste.

Who would have thought it could be so complicated to buy 4 staplers?

Longest Day?

It`s the Longest Day today, or, should I say, it’s the Shortest Night.

But when you sit down and think about it, today has 24 hours the same as any other day, so in some senses it must be inaccurate to say today is the longest day, when twenty four hours make up a whole day. To be correct we should be saying 21st. June is the day with the longest DayLight hours, but then again that can depend on the weather, can`t it? If it`s a dull, cloudy day it always seems to get dark earlier than sunny days do – or is that just my imagination?

So, if today has the Longest DayLight hours and 21st. December the Shortest DayLight hours, I wonder on which two days the hours of light and of dark are exactly the same? It must happen, mustn`t it? And it must be two day, one as we approach the winter and one coming up the other side into spring.

Blankness

What drivel am I going to write today, I don`t really know!

Why is it, that when I`m not sitting here with a keyboard at my fingertips and a screen of blank whiteness in front of me, that I can think of lot of things that I want to say and share. Yet as soon as I have time and sit here, I can`t remember what it was I thought of earlier in the day to write about?

It`s the same too when I`m in the company of other people, beforehand I`ll think, I`ll say this, or that, or ask them xyz….etc., but as soon as I`m with them I clam up. It`s so frustrating. I`m afraid too that it makes me seem unfriendly, and that`s not how I want to be.

Still, it`s given me something to write about after all.

God our Father

Is political correctness going crazy?

I`ve been reading in a newspaper recently an article which is asking people leading Christian church worship to avoid calling God "Father".

Was this some modern or secular newpaper? - No, it was a weekly Christian newspaper - The Methodist Recorder.

It really makes me wonder what the country is coming to when such suggestions appear. If Jesus, God`s son taught us to call God "Father", as in the Lord`s Prayer, what right has anyone to say that we shouldn`t refer to God as Father? Or worse still, are that saying that God isn`t God?

It`s enough to put me off going to church, if human beings make changes like this, to fundamental issues.

"Deliberate Mistakes"

I know when typing how easy it is to get letters round the wrong way, and always try to "get away" with it, by congratulating the person who points it out, as finding my deliberate mistake in the item I`ve typed. So, I was interested and pleased to come across this piece of text !

"Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. Wonder what would happen if I did the wlohe of one of my reoprts, lettres and mintues lkie taht? It would be interesting to try, and see what comments I got!

When is a chip not a chip?!

Who would have thought that a potato, peeled, cut into sticks and fried could taste so different?

One evening this week on coming home from a shopping trip we fancied some chips, a treat we often indulge in, if we`ve been out, or to a meeting or come home in the evening from a day out. So we headed for the fish and chip shop in the town, that we usually patronise, only to find that we were too late, it had closed for the day. How disappointing.

But, on driving down the High Street on our way home we spotted that the new recently opened fish and chip bar was open, so in I went and got two portions of chips. After all, chips from chip shops although all slightly different are much the same, or are they? On starting to eat these they weren`t at all to our liking I don`t know what the shop had done to them, but they didn`t taste like chips, their texture wasn`t like chips – it was really disappointing.

Whatever they`d done to the poor potato, I don`t know!

How do they do it?

I`ve been following the progress of the Supergeese on Springwatch on the BBC television, and how amazing it always is to me that birds fly so far, and how do they know the way? Even, so the programme said, chicks that had hatched this year of some species of birds would be migrating many hundreds of miles on their own.

But, my question is, how do they know where to go, and when, and how?
Another of the wonders of nature isn`t it.

Inspired to Plant

Having lived in the hottest part of the country this last weekend, or so the newspaper said, it`s been a relief today to have a shower of rain and to feel it a bit cooler. But, the sunshine and heat made me think, maybe summer is here.

I looked round the garden and it looked quite dull, plenty of greenery and growth but very little colour, so I felt inspired enough today to go to the nearby garden centre and get some plants, which I`ve now spent all afternoon planting into pots and containers. The result – the garden looks far more cheerful, bright and summery. So, I consider that an afternoon well spent, and out in the fresh air too.

And, if they flower really well, I may post a photo of them in a few weeks time – so watch out!

Sailing Barge

On a beautiful evening today, I went for a walk at a favourite place of mine. The tide for once was up and there were many boats out on the water. In particular it was a treat to see this old Sailing barge actually sailing up the creek, normally I`ve only seen it anchored on the mud with the tide out. To see it actually in use amongst all the new and modern craft was lovely, it had an elegance and presence all its own.

Sport

Having written yesterday about sport and priorities. I think I should enlarge on it today.

It`s not the actual sport and games that I think are totally unnecessary, its the money spent on them. I can see many advantages in playing games - the obvious one of the exercise one gets, the learning to work together as a team, discipline of following and obeying rules, etc.

Taking football for an example, as it`s the hot topic at the moment, teams are named as the town/city they live in, so why don`t they have a ruling that the members have to be from that place, having lived there for say 5 years or so before they can join the team. That way, it would eliminate all the thousands of pounds spent on `buying` people in. It could also make it a fairer game, as surely at present its the case of the clubs with the most money having the best players. And the money the wealthier clubs have could be used to help charities and others in need.

And why change the design of the outfits they wear every season or so, making it expensive for those who want to dress the same (especially children), to keep purchasing new clothes. Is it that the sports people have shares in clothing manufacturers!

Strange priorities

Listening to the two top stories on the news at lunch time today. It really made me question the way in which money is used and spent in this country. (and maybe in other countries too)

The first report was the good news that a drug has now become available to help with a certain type of cancer, but… the health service were saying that if they prescribed this for everyone that would benefit from it, they would probably have to make cuts in other services to finance it.

The second report was all about the World Cup, teams travelling, all the fans arriving etc…

How much does that all cost I wonder? And then there`s all the associated activities and the “must have” accessories too.
What good to people do things like that do, what`s use the winning of a cup, when people are starving in countries or dying for lack of medical care because of lack of funding?

Strange isn`t it how money can be found for sport and other non-essential items, yet not for medical and life saving needs.

Moved

I now have full admiration for anyone that moves house or home!
It`s taken me over a week to organise changing all my office/workroom with my bedroom.
A "knight in shining armour" came one afternoon this week to move furniture from one room to another for me, and he did it completely on his own, I thought it would need two people to lift and move some of the items, but in a couple of hours he had it all completed, including installing a new telephone socket for me.
So, I now sleep in my office room, and my bedroom, which I`ve had since a child is now my office room. I`ve got piles of papers and boxes of things still to decide where to store. But, at least I`m back to Blogging.

Amusing sign

Maybe it`s my pictorial imgination, but often signs along roadsides or on noticeboards and buildings bring amusing scenes to mind, for example, one I saw this week said.....

...All our customers will be put in a raffle today.....

Now, I could just picture a huge cauldron type vessel standing in the middle of the floor and every customer that entered the building being thrown in there, until it was chock-a-block full and at the end of the day one of them was picked out!
(What they would do with all the rest, I didn`t dare think about!)

Evening Out

It was enjoyable to meet up with a couple of friends to attend a preview of Flower Festivals entitled “Embrace the World” in the two Cathedrals in Norwich yesterday evening.

We started with a walk from the city centre to the Roman Catholic Cathedral, a place I`d never been into before. After an hour walking round looking at the modern flower arrangements (glass of champagne provided - not that I tackled that!) there was a “short” opening ceremony/service. What narrow hard seats they have in that cathedral!

It was then time to move on to the Anglican Cathedral to view their linked Festival. An open-top double decker bus was provided, and we bravely climbed on to the top deck, gosh, was that wind cold up there! Several laughing comments were heard to be said that people driving past in cars, must look up and think us mad, sitting there mid evening, with the cold wind blowing, but we made it to the Anglican Cathedral, and started to view the 100 or so Arrangements. Our ticket said that the event was from 6.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. and that refreshments would be served at 9 p.m. Getting about three-quarters of the way around the festival (at 8.30 p.m.) an announcement over the speaker system informed us all that refreshments were now being served. We made our way to where they were, expecting to find a light buffet (having paid well for the tickets), but – disappointment, there was just red and white wine, orange juice and a waitress with a tray with a half dozen canapés on.

Having drunk our orange juice and having had nothing to eat, we returned to view the rest of the Flower arrangements, the whole purpose of the evening, and….. what did we find…..they`d locked the Cathedral for the night, the time – 9 p.m. !

Everything at once

Why is it, I wonder, that one can go weeks and weeks without anything different happening to the routine of everyday life, and then when events occur, they all happen in the same week and the same days?

I`ve been to an event with some friends this evening (now, that`s unusual for me - I never go anywhere in the evenings), tomorrow I`d booked to go shopping with someone else, and then in the evening tomorrow I`ve got a dinner with some workmates to go to. Now that`s something that really doesn`t appeal to me, I don`t like eating as late as 8 p.m. in the evening, but I couldn`t nicely say no to this one.

Three events in two days, why couldn`t they have spaced themselves out!

To keep or to discard

Why, oh why, do we hoard so much? Or, is it only me?!

Despite setting out with good intentions to get rid of a lot of items, when it comes to it, can I really bear to part with it?... but, then again, realistically if it`s sat in a cupboard for fifteen years or more and I`ve not needed it, will I really need it in the future?

Decisions, decisions.

Room to Room

Some might wonder why I was writing about moving house yesterday. Well I`m sitting here looking around me, at all the clutter – useful clutter, I hasten to add!, which I will soon need to move.

No, I`m not moving house, but I`m moving rooms. My bedroom is soon to become my office/workroom/retreat room, and my office/workroom/retreat room my bedroom. And then my bedroom, being bigger will have room for the luxury of a nice double bed, instead of my single one, and should be able to be more of a comfy retreat room than my office/workroom/retreat room. I`ve ordered the bed (good price in a special half price sale yesterday), so now just have to find two or three people to help move the furniture. But, before they can do that I need to clear away the clutter. And, I feel at the same time, like having a spring-clean of some of my hoarded bits and pieces to make a fresh start.

So… that`s all for today…. off to the cupboards and drawers…!

Moving house

I`ve never moved house. I live in the same house that I was brought into as a tiny baby. I wonder how many other people could say that. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to move house, to start afresh in new surroundings, maybe in the same town, or maybe somewhere completely different. To have the chance to start a life of my own.

Flower Festival time

Well, the season for Flower Festivals seems to have started again. Looking at the listings of events for today in our local paper there were many to choose from, but I hadn`t time to see them all, so I went to see one at a village church this afternoon a few miles from where I live. It was depicting different countries and was quite colourful. This is one of the arrangements from it that I particularly liked.

A hungry car

What does your car like eating?

Mine eats CD`s!

It had merrily played a couple to me on my way home from my holiday, when I put the third one in – nothing – just a message saying CD error. Ok, I thought, press eject and try again. Pressed eject – what happened – absolutely nothing, can`t have pressed it firm enough I thought, try again - result still nothing. Whatever I pressed, or did, nothing got it to give me back my CD and nor to play it.

Even the men at the garage today couldn`t persuade it to give up my disc. So now it means it will have to go to the garage to be taken apart to try and get it out.

Is it the right decision?

I don`t know what`s the matter with me at the moment, (nothing healthwise I hasten to add [as far as I know anyway]), but I just don`t seem to have any interest in doing the things that I used to do, and even some of the things I`m doing I`m doing out of habit rather than with any real enthusiasm. So, I decided to give up doing a voluntary job that I`ve done for many, many years, I`m not being forced to give it up, its been my decision to do so.

Yet now that it`s actually come almost to the time to hand everything over, I`m having second thoughts – am I doing right; am I letting people down; is it just that I`m severing something that was a lifeline to me at one time that`s giving me these doubts, fears; am I doing the right thing?

I guess I`ve just got to chance it, and hope my instinct is right.

Gardens

Having just been watching the Chelsea Flower Show on televison. I enjoy seeing all the different gardens, but then I look out of the window at my back garden, and oh dear, what a difference. My lawn, if you can call it a lawn, isn`t just smooth green grass, its full of daisies, buttercups, wild violets, dandelions and weeds!, and no matter what I do, they keep on coming back again and again. My borders haven`t neat tidy edges, they`ve adjusted to the shapes of the shrubs growing in them. There`s a good crop of weeds that keep recurring however many times I pull them out, especially the bind weed which is such a nightmare that I always end up giving up on it. Oh, well, I suppose I can dream of having a garden like those one of these days, but I don`t know when!

It`s better with a man!

What a difference a man makes.

I may be old fashioned, and am definitely not a women`s libber. I suppose that yes, in some ways and things I want equality for women, like respect and equal pay etc., but in the majority of instances I feel that there are some things that men are better at, and others that women are better at.

What am I waffling on about you`re probably wondering by now…. Well, I`ll get to the point. For over thirty years of my working life I`ve had a man as the boss, and that has seemed right and proper. Then things changed and a young lady became the boss, straight away the whole atmosphere in the workplace changed, in with her came her mood swings, favouritism, and a high-handed attitude. To try and be fair to her, maybe she had taken on more than she could cope with, but she wasn`t going to admit it, and that may have been why she acted as she did, but, it wasn`t a happy atmosphere.

Now, the male presence is restored and what a difference in has made in just a short time. It is now again a pleasure to go to work (well, as pleasurable as work can be!)

Lone Tower

I came across this whilst on holiday recently. A short tower, in the middle of nowhere, not particularly tall as towers go. There were no other buildings near, its not part of a castle. From a plaque on its wall I could just make out that it was called Jubilee Tower. It made me wonder, who built it? Why put it there? What was the purpose of it?

What do my photos say about me?

Being one who likes taking photos, I couldn`t resist trying out this test to see what it said about me! Here`s the result. Like most of these things, some of it is surprisingly accurate, but some just `isn`t me`. I`ll leave readers to work out what bit isn`t me.

You're camera shy but canny!

Camera Shy

Say cheese! Oh go on! We can tell that you're the sort of person who tends to be happier behind the camera than in the picture itself. You may envy those photogenic people who always seem to look radiant in photos regardless of the situation, but the truth is that you've got one up on them.
We can tell that you're one of life's observers who pick up on interesting information and gossip just by looking and listening instead of planting yourself in the middle of the action. We also know that you're not shy all the time. In fact we bet that you can party with the best of them when you're in the mood to let your hair down. You just don't see the need to over-expose yourself!

More thoughts

My parent is back, and my quiet peaceful week of existance is shattered. I know that I should be grateful that I still have a parent, but to be perfectly honest, it`s not the parent that I was closest to, I "lost" (yes, I know, I`m using that expression which I`ve said before that I detest, but today it`s how it feels), the one that meant the most to me. I suppose you could say I was a proper `Daddy`s girl`. I just shared so much more with him, we had so many more interests in common, did more together. I always imagined it would be him and me, not her and me left. Now, as it is, I`d rather be on my own, but that`s not possible.

I`ll just have to do, as the words of a hymn we had this morning said: (Strange we should have it this morning really - it meant a lot to me when my Dad was ill and at many times since, so its become a favourite of mine)

Father, I place into your hands
The things that I can`t do.
Father, I place into your hands
The times that I`ve been through
Father, I place into your hands
The way that I should go,
For I know I always can trust you.

Thoughts

When I started this Blog, I thought of it as somewhere I could write the things that really mattered to me, that affected me, things I probably couldn`t share in any other way, my personal thoughts, and that`s what I need to do today.

I`ve got something that I want to share, that I want to talk about, yet because of what it is; how I feel; I can`t really tell anyone. Why not?, I guess because I know it`s wrong, that I shouldn`t be like this about it. And others would be shocked to know it.

So, I`m going to write it down here, maybe that will help.

I`ve just had a weeks holiday to myself followed by having the house at home to myself for almost a week because my parent was away. And, I`ve so enjoyed the freedom that it has given, the lack of tension, the ability to come and go as I like, do as I want, to live my own life. My problem is that my feelings are now that I don`t want my parent to come back. I`ve got no “feelings” for my parent, just a sense of duty. What awful things to say, aren`t they? But it`s the truth of how I feel.

And I don`t know what to do about it.

Happiness is.....

Happiness is…..

…. having the house to myself

….. time to relax

….. a leisurely walk by the sea

….. being free to do as I want to do, without any ties

….. a holiday with friends

….. cooking just for me

Wonder what others would put on a list of what makes them happy?

Bluebells

I came across this wood full of bluebells whilst out in the Norfolk Countryside at the weekend. What a carpet of colour all the hundreds of flowers made. Even to look at a single flower there is so much beauty in it. It is so easy to not notice a single one when out walking but to get them together, what a sight they make.
Maybe there`s a lesson for us in that too.

Just look at the different shades of coulour on some of these individual bluebells - aren`t they lovely. At a first look I just assumed each flowerlet was a single colour until I took this photo and saw the subtle shades that made up each one. Wonderful, beautiful.

Trust

What trust.
This mother duck was sitting on the edge of the lake with her two baby ducklings beside her, just a foot away from were we were walking, so I couldn`t resist taking this photo of them.

Travelling about last week, I saw so many beautiful aspects of this wonderful place that we live in, England. So here are a few of the photo`s I took. There were fields upon fields of sheep with new born lambs, cow with calves, winding streams, wide stretches of moorland quiet and still without a person or traffic in sight, woods full of bluebells, and of course the coastline with mile upon mile of golden smooth sand and the sea out in the far distance, at other times the tide up and lapping against the shoreline.
Walking around a large lake, wild flowers abounded in the grassy banks, and ducks with their ducklings slept right alongside where we walked. The sun shone, it was really hot some days. It really makes me wonder why people need to go abroad, when there is so much to see in this country.

Time to be "me".

Where has the last week gone to, it doesn`t seem seven days since I set out in the morning for a weeks holiday, but what a really lovely holiday I`ve had with my friends. As soon as I walked through their door, I forgot all about my parent, home, work and everything and really relaxed for the whole week.

It was a very undemanding week, just taking things easy - getting up late, well, later than I normally do, a leisurely breakfast then time to sit and read or even just sit and do nothing!
One morning having a long walk around a lake with C; on another morning, a wander along to the nearby row of shops with her. It was so good to have someone to walk with, and to walk at my speed! Then after lunch we`d have a ride out to somewhere. On other days going out about mid-morning with them, having a picnic lunch in the car, visiting some interesting places, villages etc., then back for tea and an evening just sitting watching tv, or reading - all just quiet and peaceful. Just what I`d needed. A time of not doing anything really out of the `ordinary` yet just “being”, not having any responsibilities, being accepted for the quiet person that I am.
I feel so much better for it.
It really was time to just be “me”.

Views of springtime

A pile of my photos all taken recently in spring- time. Look out for more photos after my holiday!
